İnsanlığın ortak hafızası olan kütüphaneler tarihsel gelişim süreçleri içerisinde gerek ait oldukları toplumsal yapılara gerek bağlı oldukları kurumlara gerekse de koleksiyon ve kullanıcı gruplarına göre çeşitlenerek hizmetlerini sürdürmüşlerdir. Üniversitelerin ortaya çıkışıyla birlikte artan bilgi üretimi ve bilimsel bilgiye olan ihtiyaç, üniversite kütüphanelerinin kurulmasına yol açmış; kütüphaneler sosyal ve kültürel alanla birlikte bilimsel hayatın da ayrılmaz bir parçası haline gelmişlerdir. Ülkemizin en köklü kurumlarından biri olan İstanbul Üniversitesi Merkez Kütüphanesi de sahip olduğu nitelikli koleksiyonları ile hem İstanbul Üniversitesi mensuplarının hem de yerli ve yabancı araştırmacıların bilimsel çalışmalarına destek vermektedir. Dr. Pervin Bezirci tarafından kaleme alınan ve Merkez Kütüphanenin hizmet serüvenindeki 2012-2020 tarihleri arasındaki dönemi anlatan “Geçmişten Geleceğe Açılan Kapı İstanbul Üniversitesi Merkez Kütüphanesi 2012-2020” adlı eser, bu süreçte kütüphane tarafından gerçekleştirilen pojelere, yenilikçi hizmetlere, ulusal ve uluslararası işbirliklerine ve kurumsal gelişim çalışmalarına odaklanıyor.
