ELEMENTARY TEACHERS’ VIEWS ABOUT THE LESSONS AND THEIR PREFERENCES OF TEACHING METHODS: SAMPLE OF ISTANBUL

An importance has been given elementary teacher training since the establishment of the Republic of Turkey and it has been reached to important standards. Due to the lack of elementary teachers in terms of quantity, there has been a tendency to appoint some university graduates as elementary teachers until 2000’s.Teacher-student ratio is about 1-32 and it is more than developed countries’ rates. In some crowded cities this ratio raises to 1-48 and more. Aim of this research is to gather data about elementary teachers’ views about the lessons, their preferences of teaching methods, their problems in relation to teaching practice and make some suggestions by addressing the issues arising from the research data. This study was undertaken in Üsküdar, Kadıköy, Ümraniye and Maltepe districts of Istanbul between March and May 2003 by using interview forms consisting of 25 questions. 211 elementary teachers who were chosen randomly completed these forms. From the analysis of data it highlights that many teachers gave an importance to literacy and numeracy skills between first and fourth grades. It is because of this reason, the main importance has been assigned to the courses Turkish and maths. According to the teachers Turkish, maths and English should be given by subject teachers from the period of the fourth grade. In addition to this, almost half percent of the teachers use “question and answer” as a teaching technique in their classes.
