A geomorphological approach to the identification of multi-temporal landslide activity

The cracks that develop as a result of the landslide activity are one of the important indicators for understanding the slope movements and predicting the possible secondary landslide movements. A range of methods from geotechnical, geophysical to geodesy are utilized for monitoring and long term tracking of the landslide activities. However, each of these methods has its own limitations to reveal the landslide activities. Although landslides are geomorphological processes, these monitoring approaches rarely make use of the geomorphological information and interpretations in the planning and analyzing of the measurements. The aim of this study is to present a new approach for spatial mapping of the multi-temporal activities of the deep seated and complex slides. In the study, the temporal activity and degree for the test area of Firüzköy (İstanbul) landslide were analyzed using the remote sensing data from 1996 to 2006. After establishing the map of cracks for different periods, the corresponding intensities in the geomorphological units were calculated. Next, the activity degrees for each period were identified by classifying these intensities. In conclusion, in terms of cost-benefit analysis, the proposed method was found to be either a stand-alone alternative or complementary to the existing geotechnical, geophysical to geodesy methods for assessing the landslide activity in terms of geomorphology.
