The origin and dating of late Pleistocene alluvial fan deposits in the east of Çanakkale using OSL: Preliminary results

In this paper, fluvial deposits overlying Upper Miocene formations, located in 5 km northeast of Çanakkale city, was investigated using Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) method and deposition age of the sequence was determined from quartz sands collected from three levels of the reference site. Based on petrographic composition and stratigraphic characteristics, alluvial materials might have accumulated as the combination of hyperconcentrated flow deposits, cohesive debris flow deposits and floodplain deposits. Accordingly, it seems disputable to assume these accumulations as former terrace deposits of the Sarıçay Stream. Dating results showed that sedimentation started at 100.4 ± 6.6 ka BP over the Upper Miocene formations and ended at 39.1± 2.5 ka BP.Keywords: Optically Stimulated Luminescence, Fluvial deposits, Dating, Strait of Çanakkale, Çanakkale
