Interaction of Mechanical Fire Protection Systems With Architectural Design

Fire protection systems cannot be considered independent of architectural design. Architectural design influences mechanical fire protection systems as well as mechanical fire protection stems influences architectural design. Architects, among the variables referring the shape and functions of a building, consider mainly aesthetics functionality, cost, and environmental sustainability, structural integrity, serviceability and conformity with regulations in force; however, do not consider fire safety systems as a major factor. As fire systems basically change the design, unfavourably in general, of a building, fire protection systems should be a part of architectural design. Integration of mechanical fire protection systems with other building systems and user friendliness depend on architecturally integrated design. Working coordinated with architects will lead saving costs and increase efficiency thus will facilitate operation and maintenance. Accessing fire department to the front of the building, ability to easy use of fire hydrants, influences of escape routes sprinkler systems on, access to fire pump compartment, requirement to establish intermediate installation compartments, installation and pressurising shafts, architectural requirements of car parks’ ventilation systems, fresh air inlet and exhaust discharge points are such subject’s architects and fire protection engineers work on together. Architectural and constructional requirements of fire extinguishing and smoke control systems, requests from architectural design, mistakes and problems faced in practice will be mentioned in this close work and how mistakes influenced damage to life and property will be discussed.
