A research on dyeing of denim fabrics with rubia tinctorum L. (Madder)

Madder extract, which contains natural colorants such as alizarin, purpurin etc., has been used in textile dyeing science ancient ages. Two types of fabrics, ready to be dyed white and indigo dyed fabrics, were dyed with madder extract. The fabrics were mordanted after dyeing with six different mordants. Colorimetric evaluations of fabrics were carried out by spectrophotometer. Colour fastness to washing, rubbing and light were performed. Colour strength (K/S) of fabrics was calculated from Kubelka-Munk formula.
