The Effect of Terrorism on Economic Growth: The Case of the BRICS-T Countries
Terrorism is a concept that has been on the agenda of societies and has had devastating effects since ancient times. It should not be forgotten that terrorism is a threat to the concept of security and has fatal and destructive effects. However, the economic, political, and social effects of terrorist incidents have been discussed in the literature for a long time. The aim of this study is to analyze the effect of terrorism on economic growth, which one is the most important effect on economies. For this purpose, the effect of terrorism on economic growth for BRICS-T countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and Turkey) has been studied empirically with the help of panel data analysis. The main results of the study empirically revealed that terrorism negatively affects economic growth in countries considered within the expected expectations. According to the primary empirical result of the study, one unit increase in the terror variable reduces the GDP variable by 0.396 units. As a result, it is emphasized that the international community should increase its efforts to eliminate terrorism.
