The Contribution of the Phrygian and the Lydian Fortification Techniques to the Development of the Ionian City Walls in Archaic Period
During the New Assyrian period (9th-7th centuries BC), the Urartians, the Phrygians and in the 6th century the Lydians fortified their cities with massive fortifications against the sophisticated siege techniques of Persians. The acceleration of urbanization in Ionia from the beginning of the 7th century BC to the Ionian Revolt and the Persian Wars in the early 5th century BC brought with it the construction of large walls surrounding the entire city center. In this process of architectural development, construction techniques of fortification in Phrygia and in Lydia were adopted and applied in the course of the constructions of the great city walls by the Ionian poleis. In terms of architectural style and construction techniques, this interaction can be traced through the archeological remains of the fortifications as well as the remains of civil and religious structures. In the first half of the 6th century BC, when the City of Sardeis was refortified with monumental ramparts, the poleis in Ionia reconstructed their city walls according to new principles of design. In this regard, the Late Archaic city walls of Miletos, Smyrna, Phokaia and Samos exhibit the advanced engineering practices. Therefore, it is possible to confirm the contribution of the Lydian architecture to the development of Late Archaic city walls of Ionian poleis by researching the architectural remains of these city walls.
