A study on non-catalyzed delignification systems

Conventional kraft and sulfite chemical pulping processes have special characteristics and presently under severe environmental and economical pressures. The main reason for this is the disposal of toxic waste and emissions from chemical recovery plants. Due to these disadvantages, many alternative pulping methods have been developed on a laboratory scale in recent years. One approach for possibly lowering environmental problems that is the idea of using organic solvents for chemical pulping referred to as organosolv pulping. Uncatalyzed organosolv pulping processes are enhanced by the acetic acid released from lignocellulosic material. High temperature cooking leads to a rapid increase in the acid concentration from the hemicellulose-rich regions of the cell wall and can cause condensation of the solvolysis lignin products. SEP, Alcell and Acetocell pulping processes have developed and patented.
