The Turkish Adaptation Of “Athlete Burnout Questionnaire”

The aim of this study was to examine the validity andreliability of Turkish version of the Athlete BurnoutQuestionnaire (ABQ) which has been developed by Raedekeand Smith (2001). Scale was completed by 207athletes (79 female, 128 male) with a mean of age 20.57? 3.62 years. ABQ consists of 15 items assigned to 3subscales (Reduces Sense of Accomplishment, Emotional/Physical Exhaustion and Devaluation). Constructvalidity was evaluated by confirmatory factor analysis. The Internal consistency of the scale was determinedby Cronbach alpha. Beside, Sport Motivation Scale andPhysical Self Perception Profile were administered fortesting convergent validity; Maslach Burnout Questionnairewas used to test concurrent validity. Findings offinal Turkish version of ABQ (13 items) regarding theconstruct validity of the scale were rather consistentwith the original scale’s three-factor structure [SB-?2(df = 66) = 185.70, RMSEA = .06, SRMR = .05, NFI = .92,NNFI= .94, CFI = .96, GFI = .92]. Internal consistency coefficientswere ranged between 0.75 and 0.87. Resultson concurrent validity revealed a significant correlationfound between Athlete Burnout Questionnaire andMaslach Burnout Questionnaire (p<.01). Furthermore, theconvergent validity results indicated a significant relationshipfound between subscales of Athlete BurnoutQuestionnaire and intrinsic motivation, amotivation andsport competence subscales (p<.01); but no significant relationshipwas found between ABQ and extrinsic motivation(p>.01). The psychometric properties of the Turkishversion of Athlete Burnout Questionnaire showed thatthe instrument is a valuable additional measure for thedetermination of athletes’ burnout levels in Turkey.
