Mexican students and their educational achievement: The case of Texas

This study aims to investigate racial differences in educational achievements by focusing primarily on 243 7 Mexican and white students who were seniors in Texas public schools as of spring, 2002. First, this paper will briefly talk about international immigration to the United States as well as the issue of Mexican immigration and children as important background information. Second, this study utilizes the THEOP (Texas Higher Education Opportunity Project) dataset to examine racial/ethnic origin differences in students' academic achievement. The main research questions of this study are: How does race/ethnic origin matter in students' educational achievement? What other factors account for racial/ethnic origin differences in educational achievement? The study finds that holding several variables constant, Mexican students have lower educational achievement compared to their white counterparts.
