Social Class in the Age of Identities

This article examines the relation of social class to politics in current conditions. We argue that the central interest in social analysis has recently concentrated on "cultural identities" and this could not, or could partly, understand the current conditions of the social world. For this one of the most important reasons is that social class can still play a key-role in understanding the realities of social world. We consider social class in an historical perspective by analyzing the stages it passed and ask why today, in the age of identities, it is argued that social class loses its importance. At the same time, we aim to understand identity politics in a different way. First, we will deal with classical social theories on class. By summarizing the views of Marx and Weber on the theme, we will go on to analyze the contemporary theories on social class. Afterwards, we will critically examine the perspective that assumes that the meaning of social class in politics has collapsed. As a consequence, in the context of globalization and transnational capitalism, we will aim to understand the relation between social class and identity politics by a different view-point.
