The Documents of Navigation Found in 165 Numbered Bodrum Şer’iyye Records

Of the provinces, Muğla has the longest coastline in Turkey. Despite this largest coastline there is no study that marks the place of Muğla in the history of Navigation. The information available consists of only some notes. There is no sole book or an article on this issue. On the other hand upon the conquest of Menteshe region by Turks Menteshe Bey formed his own navy and acquired the title of “Emirü‟s-sevahil”. Meanwhile he occupied some islands around the region. No document mentions any navy after Menteshe Bey in the region. The geographical features, the dense tree population provides great opportunities for shipbuilding. The navigational operations continued in the region during Ottoman period. Turgut Reis, one of the famous captains of the period, was born in this region. After the sudden attack to Ottoman Armada in Çeşme in 1770, which resulted in disaster, Bodrum gained importance in navigation. The rebellious movements that started among Greek population in the islands increased military operations in the area: In parallel to this development the navigational operations increased. The state which realized the place and importance of Bodrum in navigation or sailing began to correspond with local authorities. This official correspondence appeared in Kadı‟s recordings. The documents regarding construction of commercial and military ships, the building of “Kalyon” received much more importance. In this study the navigational operations were presented in the light of the documents of sailing or navigation found in 165 numbered Bodrum Şer‟iyye Records.
