GÜNÜMÜZ (!) İLİŞKİLERİNE TUTULAN ESKİ BİR AYNA: JOHN DRYDEN’IN MARRİAGE À LA MOD (1671) ADLI OYUNU ÖRNEĞİNDE TRAGİKOMEDYA

AN ANCIENT MIRROR HELD TO PRESENT DAY (!) RELATIONS: TRAGICOMEDY IN THE EXAMPLE OF JOHN DRYDEN'S MARRIAGE À LA MOD (1671)

Tragedy and comedy are the most important genres of ancient Greek literature. Tragicomedy created by combining certain features of these two genres could not find a place in Europe until the sixteenth century. Combining the serious environment of tragedy with the comic and cheerful elements of comedy, this genre was first named as ‘Tragicomedy’ by Plautus (186 A.D.) in the Roman Period and returned to the European stage in the 16th century under the influence of the Renaissance. This genre, which emerged from the combination of characteristics of tragedy and comedy, was ignored until the sixteenth century, because of the Aristotelian pre-acceptance that tragedy was a serious literary genre that should reflect the events experienced by the people better than the average. Although John Dryden, who is known as one of the great poets of English literature, also wrote play in this literary genre, this aspect has always been in the background. General characteristics of tragedy and comedy genres which need to be known to show the characteristics of tragicomedy will be examined and the properties of tragicomedy will be revealed taking these properties as the basis of this study. After specifying the features of tragicomedy’, we will study Marriage à la Mod (1671), one of the important works of Dryden, and explain with examples whether these features are included in the mentioned work or not.
