Visualization of spatial distribution for nitrate concentration in groundwater using GIS in Konya city area

A large proportion of water requirements for the Konya City are supplied from 198 groundwater wells. Nitrate (NO3), which is one of the important water quality parameters, is determined on the samples taken in 1998 and 2001 within the study area of 427.5 km . For this, a vector-based GIS software package ArcView GIS 3.2 is used in this study. According to maps in general, the nitrate concentration increases in city center and an average concentration of nitrate is about 2.2 mg/L in 1998 and rises up to 16.1 mg/L in 2001. A statistical relation is searched between the well depth and the concentration of nitrate. A correlation coefficient of 0.1366 on the data of 1998 and correlation coefficient of 0.0895 on the data of 2001 are obtained and it is concluded that there is no meaningful relation between the well depth and the nitrate concentrations,
