Japon Yazar Abe Kōbō’nun Yolun Sonundaki İşarete Doğru(Ovarişi Miçi no Şirube ni 終わりし道の標べに) Eserinde Memleket Algısı: Mançukuo ve Japonya

Japanese Writer Abe Kōbō’s Perception of Homeland inThe Road Sign at the End of the Road (Owarishi Michi no Shirube ni): Manchukuo and Japan

This study examines Abe Kōbō’s reflections on Manchukuo and the concept of homeland in his novel The Road Sign at the End of the Road. In the postwar period, exploiter - exploited relationship between Japan and Manchukuo has made a deep effect especially for repatriated group (hikiagesha) in Japan. Abe Kōbō, uses those experiences in Manchukuo through his first novel The Road Sign at the End of the Road. Kōbō’s experiences in Manchukuo, a former Japanese colony, inspired him to examine the concept of “real homeland”. In this study; an analogy is established between the interrelatedness of homeland, existentialism and dialectical thinking and the main themes of the novel: questioning of homeland perception, defeat and war, the indistinctness between consciousness-unconsciousness induced by opium use, and alienation. The concept of “homeland” is related to existentialism and dialectical thinking. In short, it is indicated that Abe Kōbō’s post-war life is reflected in the thoughts of the protagonist, who questions the concept of homeland during his search for the self.
