Computer code development for the numerical solution of two dimensional shallow flow equations on unstructured grid
In this paper a novel computer code is developed for numerical solution of two dimensional shallow flow equations on unstructured grid. The code is tested by running on some benchmark problems. The numerical method is based on a cell centered Finite Volume Method (FVM) applied on an unstructured triangular mesh. Weighted Averaged Flux (WAF) method is used for the computation of the fluxes in continuity and momentum equations. The most prominent property of the shallow flow equations is the discontinuities due to shock waves occurring on the free surface of the flow. Therefore, WAF is combined with HLLC Riemann solvers in order to make the method capable to describe the shock waves and also have the opportunity to use flux limiters in the computation of the interface fluxes. Besides, the Total Variation Diminishing (TVD) theory is utilized for smoothing the oscillations which may occur due to the second order accuracy of the numerical solution. The ratio of the upwind to local variations involved in the interface flux limiter functions available in the literature for the structured grid systems is described here for the first time for the unstructured grids and it is made usable with the new gradient approach. Test results show that the numerical method and the code developed are successful and can be applied to real cases.
