Experimental study on the pressure variation in a journal bearing

The radial bearings, which carry load in the radial direction and work on the principle of the hydrodynamic lubrication, are one of the commonnest types of the bearings used in industry They are especially used in environments where silence and cushioning of vibrations and resistance to vibrative forces are essential. These bearings are also employed under sub-zero temperatures. In this work, the effects of environment conditions on the performance of bearing pressure and consequently on the load were investigated. For the experiments, in order to measure the pressure distribution, 12 manometer-tubes were placed around the circumference with 30° between the tubes and 4 more tubes were-located along the hearing-length. The experiments were conducted at -8 °C and 18 °C for steel shafts and at 18 °C for plastic shafts. Different rotational speeds (1000, 1250, 1500, 1750, 2000 rpm) were employed. Additionally, at different temperature conditions, oils with different viscosities were used and their effects on the load were compared. In order to investigated the viscosity effects, OW-40 Mobil and OW-30 Castrol synthetic oils were used. The pressure variation was recorded with the sixteen tubes and the result were plotted. The performance results for plastic shaft bearing system were good at (1000 rpm) rotational speeds. On the other hand, the application of synthetic lubricant proved more effective on the bearing-shaft system.
