A Study on The Stiffness and Damping Characteristics of Sand/Rubber Mixtures Under Dynamic Loading Conditions

Using waste rubber in sand mixes has become a common practice in civil engineering. In terms of geotechnical engineering recycled rubber generally used in engineered fills and other earthwork projects. This paper presents the results of a study on the dynamic characteristics of sand/rubber mixtures under dynamic loading conditions at low and middle shear strain level. Also, the information about the energy absorption capability, initial shear modulus and damping ratio of the mixtures are obtained. A number of torsional resonant column tests were conducted on sand/rubber mixtures with different particles sizes and contents to evaluate the shear modulus and damping values. To simulate the stress-strain response of cyclic-induced loading, the measurements were taken for different confining pressures and strain levels. The results of the study indicated that rubber modification increases stiffness and damping ratio, making it a very attractive material for geotechnical applications. The modulus reduction curves, shear modulus and damping ratio graphics are presented with the percentage of rubber and sand mixtures. Rubber's high damping capacity permits consideration of rubber/soil mixtures as part of a damping system to reduce vibration. It's found out that mixtures of sand and rubber can be modeled using conventional principles of mechanics with some revisions.
