Experimental estimation, characterization and modelling of energy dissipation phenomenon in abrasive water jet cutting- a review of previous studies

Energy dissipative processes play a key role in abrasive water jet machining of materials. They influence the economical and qualitative parameters, of the process such as specific- energy and surface topography with striation marks. Experiments on sevaral materials cut by abrasive water jets under different cutting conditions show that the relation between the depth of cut and the energy dissipation is non-linear. This relation can effectively be described by a second order equation based on the parabolic model of the cutting front geometry. This paper aims to make an evaluation of previous studies focused on experimental estimation, characterization and mathematically modelling of energy dissipation phenomenon in abrasive water jet cutting.
