Evaluation of P-glycoprotein expression in locally advanced breast cancer by immunohistochemistry and relation to response to chemotherapy
P-glycoprotein (P-gp) expression was evaluated in 48 locally advanced breast cancer on biopsy specimens before and after induction chemotherapy by immunohistochemistry (clone: JSB-1). De-novo P-gp expression rate was 33.3% and increased up to 68.7% after induction chemotherapy ( p<. 0.001 ). There was no correlation between de-novo P-gp expression and tumor size, lymph node status, clinical stage, tumor type, histologic grade. Acquired P-gp expression was increased in high grade tumors (p < 0.05). No correlation was observed between de-novo P-gp expression and response to chemotherapy (p<0.05). Acquired P-gp expression was increased in partial response group ( p < 0.05 ). Therefore especially detection of acquired P-gp expression can contribute to the design of chemotherapy protocols in breast carcinoma.
