Prevalence of anti-HCV among haemodialysis patients in Denizli
Hepatitis viruses have become one of the main infectious problems in patients on maintenance haemodialysis(HD). The exact mode of transmission of hepatitis C virus (HCV) within dialysis units is unclear, although there is evidence to support nosocomial transmission among patients. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV) and its associated risk factors among HD patients in Denizli, and to discuss prevention of further transmission of HCV infection. A total of 155 HD patients from 2 HD centres were included in the study. Anti-HCV was measured by a third generation enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and 50 of the 155 (32.26%) HD patients were found to be anti-HCV positive. Mean duration of HD treatment was significantly longer in anti-HCV positive patients (48.7 months) than in anti-HCV negatif patients (27.3 months) (p=0.000). The proportion of anti-HCV positive patients increases as the duration of HD treatment lengthens (p=0.00001). The result of this study shows that HD patients carry the risk of HCV infection in Denizli, and the correlation between duration of HD therapy and anti-HCV positivity may be an indirect evidence for intraunit transmission. Extremely careful application of aseptic techniques and hygienic precautions are mandatory to reduce the incidence of nosocomial transmission of HCV to HD patients.
