CLUSTER ANALYSIS OF VOTER PREFERENCES IN TURKEY: ELECTIONS OF JUNE 24, 2018

Despite clustering of voter preferences in Turkey being widely discussed in recent years, the methods used suffer the disadvantage that the number of clusters has to be supplied by the user. This study aims to overcome the limitation of having to indicate the number of clusters beforehand and to automatically calculate the optimal number of clusters for voter preferences in June 24, 2018 elections by conducting a two-step cluster analysis. To achieve this aim, a variety of clustering solutions ranging from ten clusters to a solution with only one cluster have been compared using the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) as determining the correct number of clusters in the data. It is concluded that the best cluster solution with the smallest AIC is equal to three. It is used to represent the results of the analysis of voter preferences for each cluster comparatively. Furthermore, spatial proximity of provinces in each cluster suggests the determining impact of geography on voting decisions.
