COMPARISON OF RISK FACTORS FOR HEPATITIS C VIRUS INFECTION AMONG TURKISH PRIVATES LIVING IN TURKEY AND ABROAD BEFORE RECRUITMENT

Hepatitis C Virüs (HCV) is the major cause of chronic liver diseases and it is common in intravenous drug abusers. The aim of this study is to compare HCV risk factors between the HCV infected privates living abroad and in the motherland before recruitment. The patients, that were admitted Haydarpaşa Education Hospital and diagnosed HCV infection in one year period of time, were included in the study. Semi-structured clinical interview was used to assess the demgraphic properties and assosciated risk factors. The patients were grouped as "GROUP 1: The patients living in Europe at least ten years (n=48), GROUP 2: The patients still living in Turkey (n=37). %56,5 of cases were migrated to Europe and have been still living there. Among emigrants, history of confinement, hazardous sexual activity, tattoos, substance abuse especially intravenous route were more common (p<0.001) and there was statistically significant relationship between those risk factors and being emigrant. Meanwhile history of blood transfusion were more frequent in the group living in Turkey(p<0,01). In this study it can be concluded that in terms of HCV infection, risk taking behavior can be observed more frequently in patients living abroad than the patients living in Turkey (Pam Med J 2008;2(2):62-67)
