Investigating Speed Hump Effects on Drivers Using Simulation Techniques

Speed humps are one of the most preferred methods for achieving traffic calming. Therefore, it is important to investigate whether speed hump applications are in compliance with the current standards, whether they achieve the specified speed reduction target or not, and their effects on the vehicle and drivers/passengers. Speed humps used in Bursa Uludağ University campus are examined in this study for evaluating the speed humps’ conformity to the standards (TS 6283) and for their effectiveness on drivers in terms of comfort. The study consists of three stages. In the first stage speed humps’ comfort levels are determined according to the ISO 2631 by assessing the vibrations occurred due to the horizontal/vertical accelerations as vehicles passing over the humps with varying speeds via simulation model (only this stage is explained in this paper). In the second stage, the subjective comfort levels felt by the drivers considering the speeds of the vehicles are determined by observations and survey in the field. In the third stage, some statistical analysis will be conducted to reveal the relationship between subjective comfort levels obtained by the survey and theoretical comfort levels obtained by simulations with the observed speeds. In line with the findings, the effectiveness of the speed humps will be evaluated by realizing the achievements on traffic calming desired and suggestions will be developed accordingly.
