AN INVESTIGATION ON SOCIETAL SEXUAL ROLES FORMED IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TURKISH SCHOOL BOOKS

In this study, societal gender roles in the Turkish School Books used in the 6th grade of elementary Schools are examined. In order to determined societal sexual roles in the texts and visuals in the books, Content Analysis method is used. While the population of this study comprises of Turkish School Books used in elementary schools, the sampling comprises of Turkish School books for 6th grades prepared by Ministry of Education and Koza Publishing. It is found that in both of the books, presented male and female societal sexual roles are under the influence of traditional understanding. It is found that in the books men have more space than women, that among occupational roles men are presented in more various and different occupational groups than women and that women are represented more in-family matters. In the books, regarding in-house roles women are presented to be in the house whereas men are outside as a family member providing the living of the family. In sexual roles regarding personality, women are portrayed as weak and passive and man are portrayed as strong and clever individuals
