Event Tourism and Religious Tourism Paradox: A Bibliometric Analysis for Determining the Position of Pilgrimage Travels in Tourism Literature

It is observed that the desires and expectations of today's tourists differ day by day. These differences lead to the emergence of alternative tourism types instead of mass tourism. In this context, event tourism and religious tourism are two important types of tourism that lead people to travel with different motivations.Event tourism and religious tourism are considered as two of the most important tourism types that have many positive impacts on socio-cultural, economic, environmental and political aspects of destinations and led people to travel since ancient times. Today, destinations continue to attract tourists with special events and religious-based travelsIn tourism literature, it is observed that there are uncertainties in the classification of many tourism types. The aim of this research is to show whether there is a paradox in the classification of Hajj travels in tourism literature or not. In this context, 124 articles which consider Pilgrimage as a tourism type were examined by using bibliometric analysis. According to the analysis data, although Pilgrimage travel is mostly considered as religious tourism in literature, it has been found that a complete consensus on the subject can not be reached and it is a complication in classification.
