The effects of the forms of the forage on the growth and feed efficiency characteristics of brown swiss calves

In this study, the effect of two different forms of the forage (dry hay in chopped or natural forms) on the growth and feed efficiency characteristics of Brown Swiss calves were investigated. Forms of the forage did not have statistically significant effect on the live weights obtained at birth, weaning, 4 and 6 month of ages. In the periods between birth and weaning, weaning and 4 month of age, 4 and 6 months of ages, the chopping of the dry hay significantly lowered dry hay consumption, but the chopping process did not have significant effect on the consumption of the concentrate. Dry hay consumption per kg weight gain (as dry matter) of calves fed chopped hay were significantly (P<0.01) lower than these of the calves fed hay in natural form. However, the difference between treatment groups in terms of total feed consumption per kg weight gain were not significant between birth and 4 months of age and significant (P<0.01) between 4 and 6 months of ages.
