EFFECTS OF LAND USE/LAND COVER CHANGE ON SOME SOIL PROPERTIES IN THE AKKAYA DAM WATERSHED

The aim of this study is to determine the effects of land use/land cover differences on some hydro-physical and chemical properties of soils. The experimental site is located in Nigde-Akkaya Dam watershed. Soil samples were collected from 3 types of land use/land cover system (farmlands have different land cover (bean, potatoes, clover and apple grown sites), 2-years abandoned land and grassland) which have similar ecological conditions and at 0-20 cm soil depths. In each type of land use/land cover, 2 sampling areas were specified (20x20 m), and soil samples that are disturbed and undisturbed were collected from 3 spots of each area. Some of hydro-physical and chemical properties of soils such as particle size distribution, particle density, pH, electrical conductivity, organic matter, dispersion ratio, bulk density, total porosity, water holding capacity and hydraulic conductivity (permeability) were determined. According to study results soils in the study site were prone to erosion. The study results showed that land use/and land cover differences significantly affect soil bulk density, total porosity, organic matter, hydraulic conductivity, clay, silt, sand and dispersion ratio.
