Effect of fine pumice aggregate on performance of cement based self-leveling screed

Screeds are building materials used to fix surface defects and bevel floors. Conventional cementitious screeds require extra labor to level the surface and create an extra dead load in buildings as they are produced using normal weight aggregates. In this study, self-compacting and lightweight screeds with a density value of 1080 – 1156 kg/m3 were produced. In the produced composite mortars, pumice in two different sizes was used as the main aggregate and melamine sulfonate-based superplasticizer was used to provide self-leveling. Within the scope of the study, flowability, density, porosity, 1, 7, 28 and 120 days compressive and flexural strength, abrasion resistance, surface hardness and shrinkage and expansion properties of composite mortars were determined. According to the results of the study, the flowability property of the mortars decreases as the amount of pumice entering the mixture increases. Similarly, as the amount of pumice increases, the porosity of the mortar increases, the unit volume mass decreases, and accordingly its mechanical performance decreases.
