Birçok bitki içerdiği fitokimyasal maddeler bakımından, hastalıkların tedavi edilmesinde önemli rol oynamaktadır. Bu yüzden günümüzde, bitkilerin yapısında bulunan kimyasal maddeler araştırılmakta ve bu maddelerin çeşitli hastalıklardaki koruyucu özellikleri incelemektedir. Dünyada en yaygın ticari kullanım alanı bulmuş steroidal saponin içeriği yüksek bitki Yucca schidigera’dır. Son yıllarda, Yucca schidigera’nın fenolik madde ve saponin içeriği insan ve hayvan sağlığı üzerine etkisi giderek önem kazanmaktadır. Bu derlemede, Yucca schidigera ve içerdiği saponinler ile fenolik bileşiklerinin, hipokolesterolemik ve antioksidan özellikleri incelenmiştir.

Several plants play an important role in curing the diseases with the phytochemical contents of them. Therefore novadays, contents of chemical matters of plants and their protective effects on disease are investigated. The major commercial sources of steroid saponin is Yucca schidigera. Recent years, the saponin and phenolic matters contents of Yucca schidigera and their effects on human and animal health are one of the most studied subject. In this review, the effects of contents of the saponin and phenolic matters of Yucca schidigera and their hypocholesterolemic and antioxidant properties have been discussed
