Bu makalede daimî fakat hâlâ karara bağlanmamış bir meseleyi ele almaktayım: Politik ekonominin hangi versiyonu -kollektivist olanı mı yoksa bireyci olanı mı- insanın temel karakteriyle daha uyumludur? İnsan doğal olarak bir bireyin bizzat kendi çabalarının ürünlerine hakkına saygı mı duyar yoksa diğer insanların bu ürünler üzerinde daha fazla (daha yüksek) bir hakka sahip olduğuna mı inanır? İnsan genetik olarak bir bağımsız karar verici olmaya mı programlıdır yoksa, pasif bir rolde, güçlü bir lideri izleyerek kendisini daha rahat mı hisseder? Elbette, filozoflar ve siyasal teorisyenler bu sorulara farklı cevaplar verdiler, fakat cevaplarını hemen her zaman önemli destekleyici deliller olmaksızın ortaya koydular.
