The Levels of Anxiety, Hopelessness and Learned Resource fullness and the Prevalence of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, İn the Civil Defence Union Personnel

Objective: The earthquakes that occurred in Turkey's Marmara region on 17th August 1999 and in Düzce on 12th November 1999 were the biggest disasters of the last century. These earthquakes have affected the lives of millions of people. İn this period, Ankara Civil Defence Union personnel vvorked by heart to minimize the effects of the disaster, just like the other unions and foundations. This union has been on duty at many disasters and has been exposed to numerous traumatic events since the date of establishment. On the basis of these thoughts our aim was to estimate the level of anxiety, hopelessness and learned resourcefullness, and the prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder and to supply a psychiatric support if needed. Method: The study was performed at the Civil Defence Union in Ankara, betvveen December 1999 and February 2000. Individual intervievvs was made with the total number of 45 personnel and the SCID-I PTSD sub-scale, State-trait anxiety Scale Beck Hopelessness Scale and Rosenbaum Learned Resourcefullness Scale was applied. The data was compared with a control group chosen from individuals vvhose residency were Ankara, and who had experienced the earthquakes in Ankara, just like the Civil Defence Union personel. The control group was matched with the study group by age and sex. The study and control group had the same number of subjects. Results and Conclusion: Compared with the control group, posttraumatic stress disorder rate was found to be clearly higher (23.6%) in the Ankara Civil Defence Union personel group. The hopelessness level was also higher than the control group. Among the Civil Defence Union personnel group, the subjects diagnosed as PTSD had lovver learned resourcefulness levels than the ones who were not diagnosed as PTSD.
