FLOW THEORY IN PSYCHOLOGY AND ITS EVALUATION IN RELATION TO MUSIC PERFORMANCE

Flow theory describes the psychological aspects of the state, in which one performs atask with intrinsic motivation, intense concentration, a deep sense of joy and a feelingof satisfaction. This study, which stemmed from the notion that flow theory could bea beneficial resource for improving music performance, aims to determine variousflow dimensions, to discuss the relationship of flow with music and performance andto present suggestions towards improving music performance. Flow properties areexplained through a literature review and these properties are evaluated in the context ofperformance. It is determined that flow is beneficial for music performance in the areasof attention, motivation and concentration. Flow also has positive effects on performersthrough its nature which includes ease of movement, a deep sense of satisfaction andpositive mood. Flow disables negative mental thoughts and physical symptoms associatedwith performance anxiety, therefore it is presented as a constructive concept for musicalperformance anxiety. In light of all these findings, various notions and methods, suchas determining goals, prioritizing intrinsic motivation, improving focus and awareness,visual recording and imagery are suggested towards helping with performers’ experienceof flow and the enhancement of music education.
