Effect of Education and Monitoring on Level of Diabetic Patients' Self-efficacy and Health Beliefs

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of study was to determine the effect of a planned educational program on health beliefs, self efficiency and metabolic control in type 2 diabetes patients. METHODS: This study was a single blind, pre-post test parallel design, semi-experimental study. 50 individuals, 25 of which were in the experimental and 5 were in the control group consisted the sample of the study. “Sociodemographic data form” regarding diabetes patients and “Health Belief Model Inventory” ‘Self-efficiency in Diabetes Scale’ were used as data collection forms. After the initial monitoring, planned diabetes education and monitoring program was administered to the experimental group during 12 weeks. RESULTS: At the end of 12 weeks, both intervention and control groups improved in HbA1c and fasting blood glucose values, while the HDL and triglyceride levels in the intervention group improved significantly, the LDL and total cholesterol levels increases and the decreases in diastolic levels were significant in the control group. In both groups, the self-efficacy scale scores inthe other dimensions except the physical exercise sub-dimension; in the health belief model, the incerease in the subscales of severity and obstacles in intervention group and the subscales of severity and benefits in the control group were found to be significant. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: It has been observed that planned education and follow-up of patients with diabetes have a positive effect on the health beliefs of the patients and that the summation has a positive increase in the mean of the subscale scores and has a positive effect on the results of some metabolic values.
