Precursors of Nagel’s Thought: Farrell and Sprigge

Perhaps the most important effect of Thomas Nagel’s widely known classic paper “What is it like to be a bat?” (1974), of course along with the contributions from other philosophers sharing similar intuitions with that of Nagel at that time, might be the fact that it helps bringing back the problem of consciousness as a central topic of discussion. That being said, Nagel’s famous definition, according to which having a conscious experience for any organism is strictly tied to the presence of something it is like to be that organism, is not an original one; because this idea had been spelled out by Farrell (1950) and Sprigge (1971). In this essay, first I will try to explain Farrell’s reason for refusing features of experience. In the second section, I will try to present the outlines of Sprigge’s thoughts, especially the very intrinsic connection between consciousness and final causes. By giving enough room for the views of these two thinkers, whose names are only occasionally mentioned in footnotes or bibliographies, I aim to partially fill in the gap in the history of contemporary philosophy of mind. In the conclusion, I will compare and contrast the views of Farrell, Sprigge and Nagel, and point out especially where Nagel’s essay (1974) presents, besides other original aspects, a very important and original remark.
