Mass politics and political posters: the case of Bolsheviks

Contrary to the assertions and theoretical assumptions of the Totalitarian School which was erstwhile hegemonic in Soviet historiography, Bolsheviks did not have an omnipotent power in the early Soviet society. It is only a myth that the power of the Bolsheviks was based only on coercion and concentrated merely on the construction of state institutions. As other political groups, they also tried to obtain the consent of ordinary people. To this end, Bolsheviks recruited various means of mass politics in order to procure the mobilization of the society, since they needed legitimacy to reinforce and consolidate their power, to control the society efficiently, to continue the military and economic war and to build up a society of their own imagination. Bolsheviks tried to make use of all kinds of instruments of mass politics such as press, pamphlets, theatre, cinema, music, campaigns, spectacles, festivals, sport activities etc. Political posters were such illustrative means and medium of mass politics and social mobilization. Millions of them were printed and circulated all over the country. These illustrative sources are a valuable mine for historians to dig out precious information about the mentality of the new regime. They also provide hints on how Bolsheviks depicted their political discourse on the walls.
