Migration (Muhaciroba) from Southwest Georgia to the Ottoman Empire, 1879-1882

1877-78 Ottoman-Russian war had some significant results. Perhaps the most important one was the mass migration of the Muslim population from the territories that the Ottomans lost in the Balkans and the Caucasus. Batum, Artvin and Kars regions were among the lands which large number of immigrants had left. Based on the rich documentation of the National Archive of Georgia and some newspapers, the authors provide some insights about the migration that took place from these regions to the remaining lands of the Ottoman Empire between the years 1879 and 1882, and examine the attitude of the Russian administration established in the region after the war.
