An Ottoman Intellectual at the Centre of Science, Theology and Politics: Patriarch of Jerusalem Chrysathos Notaras

The Patriarch of Jerusalem between 1707 and 1730, Chrysanthos Notaras is an extremely important figure both for his activities in the field of science and for Orthodox theology and patriarchal politics. One of the points in which he differs from his Orthodox contemporaries is that he benefitted from the scientific, in particular Arabic, studies produced in the Ottoman word on the one hand, and closely pursued the Scientific Revolution continuing in Europe on the other. Having established a large and variegated network of relations, Chrysanthos also managed to realize the unaccomplished scientific projects of the preceding Orthodox scholars by reconciling his scientific vision with theology and ecclesiastical politics. The idea that constitutes the backbone of this article is that individuals such as Chrysanthos can only be understood on realistic terms when we take into account the broader dynamics of the Ottoman world, of which they were increasingly becoming a more important part.
