The Adventure of the Opium in Japan and Japan’s Ordeal with the Opium (1853-1895)

One of the first things that come to mind with regards to the West’s relations with China in the 19th century is the control that they established through opium and its trade. However, little is known about the role of opium in Japan’s relations with the West. Despite the unequal treaties that it signed with the West, Japan was able to protect its commercial rights and control over opium trade and even managed to make use of opium as an effective commodity for its imperialist policies. Towards the end of the 19th century, while getting rid of the unequal treaties, Japan itself began to rise as an imperialist power when its practices on opium trade resulted in the creation of an opium empire. This article aims to examine the role of opium and its trade as a determining factor in the rise of imperialist Japan and evolve into an opium empire.
