Determination of appropriate treatment in benign paroxysmal positional vertigo according to pathophysiology

Successful treatment of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo depends not only on the identification of the affected canal, but also on the correct diagnosis of the pathogenesis. In this paper, by determining the pathological mechanisms depending on the characteristics of the nystagmus emerging during diagnostic maneuvers (canalolithiasis, cupulolithiasis, canalith jam, and central disinhibition mechanism), appropriate therapeutic maneuvers due were specified. A diagram for arriving appropriate diagnosis and treatment for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo was designated.
