Estimation of feed ıntake and digestibility by sheep fed at uarious levels of concentrate, using alkane indicator technique

In this study, investigation of using of alkane indicator technique for estimating of dry matter intake and digestibility were aimed on lambs fed varying levels of concentrate diets. Fifteen male lambs weighing 41.7±0.8 kg (between 6-7 months, Tuj breed) were divided into three equal groups and fed with 100% hay (Group A), 75% hay + 25% concentrate (Group B) and 50% hay + 50% concentrate (Group C). Trial period ended on 30th days. Faecal samples were collected between day 8 to 14 after capsules swallowed to animals. Dry Matter Intakes (DMI) and Digestibilities (DMD) were compared Dry Matter Intake Estimates (DMIe) and Dry Matter Digestibility Estimates (DMDe) obtained using alkane indicator technique. Alkane C32 and C33 contents of hay and concentrate were determined as 3.27 –19.19 mg/kg for hay and 4.52-4.11 mg/kg for concentrate respectively. Alkane C36 was not detected in both hay and concentrate. Alkane recoveries were decreased while increasing the ratio of concentrate in the ration (P<0.05). The best DMIe’s were obtained from Group B using the alkane pair C33: C32 (R2=0.98). DMIe were overestimated than real DMI in group A. The accuracy of DMIe was decreased especially with the alkane pair of C33: C36 in group C (R2=0.47- 0.56). DMDe obtained from using of alkane C32 and C33 were similar to DMD, but DMDe obtained from using of alkane C36 were determined lower than DMD. Consequently alkane indicator technique could be used to estimate dry matter intake and digestibility in lambs fed varying levels of concentrate diets.
