Kurgu, sinema tarihinde ortaya çıkışı itibariyle çekim hatalarını veya oyuncuların kusurlarını gidermeyi amaçlayan bir yoldur ancak bunun ötesinde sanatsal ve estetik kaygılar taşımaktadır. Kurgunun mekanik yönünü ön plana alan montaj anlamı basit bir kesme birleştirme ifadesi verirken; kurgu daha çok estetik ve yetenek gereken özellikleri içine almaktadır. Çekim sonrasında görüntülerin kurgulanmasıyla yapılan önceden tasarlanan bir düşünce doğrultusunda oluşturulmuş senaryonun kendi bütünlüğü içinde çekilmesi ve çekilen görüntülerin senaryo doğrultusunda sıralanarak, gerekli ses ve efektlerin eklenmesiyle birlikte izleyiciye sunulacak biçime getirilmesidir. Ya da en basit anlamıyla kendi içinde tematik olarak bağıntılı görüntülerin birleşimidir. Birleştirme, düzeltme, kısaltma ve inşa etme gibi temel fonksiyonları bulunan kurgu sinema sanatının şu anda bulunduğu noktada olmasındaki en büyük yardımcısı ve kendisi de estetik bir sanat olarak gelişmiştir.
