The Importance of the Distinction between Zāt and ‘Unwān in Propositions from the Aspect of Knowledge

The Mashshai peripatetic philosophy tradition divides the sciences according to their subjects and aims. When looked at from this aspect, the subject matter of logic becomes the secondary intelligible meanings, based on the first intelligible mean- ings, as a means of arriving at the unknown from the known. The aim of this is, when the rules are applied, to protect human thought from error. This perspective is carefully reflected in the sections of logic, i.e., tasawwūr conception and tasdīq assent . This article deals with this reflection in the section of tasdīqāt in particular in connection with ‘aqd al-haml confirmation of the predication , ‘aqd al-wadh‘ confirmation of the subject , zāt al-mawdhū‘ substance of the subject and ‘unwān al-mawdhū‘ predicate of the subject . While the concepts of zāt al-mawdhū‘ and ‘unwān al-mawdhū‘ are related to the subject of logic, those of ‘aqd al-haml and ‘aqd al-wadh‘ are related to the aim of logic. This is so because, when working from the known to the unknown, the aim is to widen the area of knowledge without falling into error. When the quoted concepts are correlated to the subjects of existence and nature in the Mashshai tradition, they come into a state that can be understood as meaningful and, at the same time, gain new meanings from the aspect of philosophi- cal thought. Accordingly, it presents an opportunity for evaluating the proposition of ‘aqd al-wadh‘ as an analytic proposition and that of ‘aqd al-haml as a synthetic one. This article, while trying to explain the basic concepts of zāt al-mawdhū‘, ‘unwān al- mawdhū‘, ‘aqd al-wadh‘ and ‘aqd al-haml, on which the Mashshai understanding of proposition was based, it also demonstrates, from those concepts, that the separation between analytic and synthetic can be interpreted in relation to this understanding
