New Approaches to Thematic Projects in the Design of Urban Spaces: Eskisehir Example

Finding an application area in urban spaces; theme is a concept which establishes relationships between the city dwellers, visitors and the city, determines the city image and increases the city’s recognation in national and international platforms. Therefore, it is required for administrators, designers, artists and city dwellers who have a contribution to the formation of urban spaces to consider the importance, function and impacts of the theme in the present and future spatial arrangements. In the arrangement of these spaces which are public areas open for everyone, the fact that the natural and artificial geography of the place where the theme exists is associated with its cultural and historical geography is important for both developing a strong and rooted discourse in terms of image and recognition and increasing the sense of belonging in those who live and do not live in the city. Eskişehir is one of the leading cities in Turkey in terms of thematic projects. In the city, there are; Porsuk Stream that has a strong geographical reference, Odunpazarı Houses that are historically significant, as well as young and dynamic cultural features especially with the image of a student city. It’s important that these features are used properly and carefully in the design of urban public spaces.
