Measuring Spatial Characteristics of Cities Using Landscape Metrics; Malatya City

In recent years, economic growth, population growth and rapid urbanization, major changes in the spatial form of cities have created significant challenges for urban sustainability. In order to cope with these challenges and manage urbanization, understanding specific historical, geographical, social, cultural and ecological factors and key spatial characteristics is essential as it requires scientific input in urban planning and design. Therefore, this study is very important in terms of comparing the spatial syntax analysis and landscape metrics methods, which deal with cities from different perspectives. Based on the assumption that both techniques are behavior-based and there may be a correlation between them, this study aims to investigate the correlation between the two techniques. In line with this goal, first of all, the main urban core of the city of Malatya was determined in the study. First of all, landscape metric analysis were carried out within the determined boundaries. In the next stage, spatial characteristics of the study area were revealed by making space syntax analysis within the boundaries of the determined urban core. As a result of the study, it has been revealed that the landscape metrics used to understand the dynamic structure of the ecosystem or landscape by producing quantitative information for mathematical ecology can also be used in the evaluation of urban systems.
