Hydrogen Production from Catalytic Gasification of Çan Lignite

In this study, Çan lignite, a Turkish lignite with a high Sulphur (5.61 %) and ash (23.09%) content, were gasified with Na2CO3, NiCl2, Fe2O3, K2CO3 and Ca(NO3)2 catalysts and effects of these catalysts on gasification, in terms of total gas amount, and composition of produced gas was evaluated, and the most effective catalyst was determined. Gasification experiments were performed at atmospheric pressure with 0.5 mL min-1 water feed flow rate. The most effective catalyst was determined as Na2CO3 at 700 ºC. The total gas volume produced by gasification of 1.0 g of coal (dry-ash free) with %3 Na catalyst at 700 ºC was 2839 mL with % 74.7 H2. Finally, different gasification temperatures between 600-900 ºC were tested with the optimum amount of catalyst and effects of temperature on gasification were evaluated. The highest gasification yield in terms of total gas volume and the produced amount of H2 was obtained at 900 ºC with 3033 mL total gas volume and 75.7 % H2.
