Investigation of plantago major extracts on mitotic index of human lymphocytes

People living in the Black Sea Region have been using Plantago major to treat the wounds and they claim they get good results. Based on this traditional treatment, Plantago major was thought to have mitotic stimulation activity. Normally, only the part of <%1 of lymphocytes show mitotic activity. Therefore phytohemaglutinin (PHA), isolated from Phaseolis vulgaris (red bean), is useful for chromosome analyses in lymphocyte cultures. It stimulates the potential mitotic activation of leukocytes in G0/G1 phase of cell cycle. In this study, instead of PHA, the SF extraction of Plantago major was used in 30 lymphocyte cultures. At the third S-phase, the cellular DNA stained with propidium iodide (PI). Then cell cycle and DNA content were analyzed by FCM. According to statistics of flow-cytometric cell cycle results we thought that there is an active substance or substances in the extract of Plantago major, which stimulates the cell cycle like PHA.
