Effects of Biochar Additions to Soil on Nitrate and Ammonium Leaching

Holding plant nutrients longer period of time within the root zone means higher  fertilizer use efficiency. Leaching of plant nutrients below the root zone becomes both unavailable for plants and also led to the pollution by leaching to ground water and harms ecosystem functions. This study was conducted to test the effects of biochar application on nitrate (NO3-) and ammonium (NH4+) leaching from moderate texture soil. The biochar was produced from tomato harvest residues pyrolzed at 500 °C. Leaching studies were conducted in PVC pipes of 35 cm in length with three replicates, and the biochar doses applied were 0%, 1.0%, 3.0% and 6.0%. The amount of total nitrogen (240 kg N ha-1) and water were determined based on the needs of sugar beet for 60 ton/ha yield. Total water was applied at six times in drip form. The leachate during each irrigation period was collected and analyzed for the concentrations of NH4 and NO3- and pH and electrical conductivity (EC). Although statistically significant differences between aplications in terms of the concentration of NO3- leached water, washing the application had no significant effect of NH4+. Although the difference among the treatments was statistically significant in terms of NO3- concentrations of leachates, NH4+ concentration was not significantly different among the treatments. The most efficient treatment in terms of reducing the NO3- leaching was found to be 3% biochar dose which lowered the NO3- leaching 34.5% compared to the control. The highest NO3- concentration (9532 mg kg-1) after the six leaching events was obtained in 6% biyochar treatment. The lowest concentration of NO3- (6950 mg kg-1) was obtained in the control treatment. The results of this study showed that nitrogen can be hold (especially NO3-) longer time in the root zone with biyochar applications.
