Identification of Bacteria Isolated from Drinking Water and Determination of Relationship Between their Antibiotic Susceptibilities and Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (Turkish with English Abstract)

A total of 35 bacterial strains were isolated from drinking water in Oltu district of Erzurum province. In total, 9 different genus and 10 different species were identified by using Microbial Identification System (MIS). Antibiotic susceptibility of all the strains was examined with respect to ten different antibiotics (Amikacin, Apramycin, Gentamicin, Kanamycin, Ofloxacin, Oxacillin, Penicillin, Rifampicin, Sulphamethoxazole and Tobramycin) by using the disk diffusion method. The relationship between antibiotic susceptibilities of the strains and fatty acid methyl esters was investigated. The results demonstrated that an average of 26 percent of whole bacterial strains showed resistance against the tested antibiotics. Moreover, it was observed that there was a significant positive or negative correlation between some fatty acid methyl esters of bacteria and their antibiotic susceptibilities.
